SUBJECT: Auditorium Fountain or Planting t;4 ~ e y cr ;`„~ a~
saa
Pusuant to the Gity Council's request of June 29, 1964 that the matter of a
fountain for the trianguiar area in front of the Auditorium be again considered,
the Following is submitted:
1. Afull-scale, high-volume, illuminated fountain such as that on the
corner of titrilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards or Los Feliz and
Riverside Drive will bear an initial price tag of $90, 000. Thereafter,
operation and maintenance will cost about $5, 000 per year for an
average 4 1/2 or 5 hours per day operation.
2. A less pretentious, but nevertheless very attractive, two-spray ring
fountain can be installed for about $14, 500. This is the fountain
designed by James i~iount. Continual maintenance and cleaning will
of course be necessary thereafter.
Fountains are beautiful but terribly expensive, and they are particularly
vulnerable to our national curse, the senseless vandalism that destroys. or
defaces everything set out for the public's use or enjoyment.
On the other hand, we may fill the area with flowers at a modest initial cost
of $350. Maintenance costs would be negligible, being principally for water,
fertilizer and soil conditioners, and fresh plants.
