SUBJECT: Revised Classification Specification: Tree-Trimmer Low
Introduction
This report requests that Council move to .adopt revised classification
specification for Tree Trimmer Low.
Background
As part of the Personnel Department's classification program, one
classification specification has been routinely updated to more
accurately reflect the duties of that position. The Personnel Board
approved the revised specifications at their January 11, 1982 meeting.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council move to adopt the revised
classification specification for Tree Trimmer Low.

TREE TRIMMER - LOW
DEFINITION: Under minimal supervision, trims, prunes, and
removes street and park trees. Performs related duties as
required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:
Differs from a Tree Trimmer - High Climber in that a Tree
Trimmer - Low performs tree-trimming and pruning tasks
from a ground level or from only moderate heights using ladders or
an aerial lift, while a Tree Trimmer - High Climber trims and prunes
at relatively high levels using ropes, saddles and other climbing
equipment.
TYPICAL DUTIES:-
Removes limbs and lower branches from street and park trees.
Removes dead fronds from palm trees.
Assists high climbers by tending ropes, tools and other
equipment.
Performs rigging by preparing slings and block and tackle
assemblies.
Performs tree maintenance including bracing, cabling, bark
tracing, staking and cavity work.
Loads leaves, branches, and other debris onto trucks.
Removes fallen trees.
Drives a truck, operates a self propelled aerial lift and
power saws.
May operate power equipment such as stump cutter, brush
chipper and high ranger.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM STANDARDS: Applicant must be able to demonstrate
the following:
Knowledge of: ropes, lines and cables; principles of tree
trimming and pruning,
Ability to: perform routine manual labor and work requiring
physical dexterity; operate tree trimming equipment and tools; tie.
knots.
Possession of valid driver's license.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school supplemented by courses in
tree maintenance.
One years' experience performing tree trimming or pruning,
including work with ropes, lines and cables.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under technical supervision of a Tree Trimmer Super-
visor or a Tree Trimmer - High Climber who makes detailed work
orders, occasionally reviews work in progress, and periodically
reviews completed work,
