Introduction ~`° ~~~~~~~ .. .. __, ~~ A job specification for Industrial Safety Engineer was approved by the Personnel Board on February 22, 1978. Back rg ound The Industrial Safety Engineer, under the administrative super- vision of the Director of General Services, will administer both the safety and productivity improvement programs of the City. The duties of the position include designing and effecting safety-related procedures to minimize or eliminate accidents, monitoring conformance with State safety regulations, and seeking methods to increase productivity and effectiveness of workers. A survey of private industry, public utilities, and local cities produced a group of positions which varied greatly in duties, requirements and salaries. Few were strictly comparable. Exam- ination of our internal classification system produced a reasonably comparable position, Personnel Analyst. Both the Personnel Analyst and Industrial Safety Engineer positions involve observation of work in progress, and analysis of the duties performed and the abilities necessary to perform them. The Personnel Analyst uses this information to develop tests, while the Industrial Safety Engineer uses it to develop programs to increase productivity and safety. Additionally, both positions require an appropriate Bachelor's degree and two years' experience in the field. Therefore, if approved, the salary for Industrial Safety Engineer will be the same as that of Personnel Analyst, MAR 1 4 1978 To: .Mayor and City Council March 2, 1978 Page Two $1718 E-step, ($20,Fi16 yearly.)
