Introduction c~Tv cs.b~~>~ c~r~~
This report is requesting the City Council to adopt a resolu-
Lion for the establishment of an undergrounding utility district
on Broadway between Twentieth Street and T~rrenty-sixth Street.
Background
A considerable number of utility poles on this section of
Broadway present an unsightly appearance. Since there are no
overhead services to adjacent properties, a public hearing is
not necessary and this undergrounding can be accomplished
without the usual long delays due to the problems associated
with the public contact,
Section 7801 of the Municipal Code requires the City Engineer
to prepare a report containing data on estimated costs to the
City and. affected property owners; time required to complete
the project and remove the poles; and other pertinent factors.
The following is furnished in compliance with this require-
ment.
To: Mayor and City Council -2-
April 1, 1976
All costs of installing new underground facilities within the
street rights-of-way, and all costs of removing overhead
facilities within said rights-of-way, will be borne by the
Southern California Edison Company, General Telephone Company
and Theta Cable of California. The estimated cost to Edison
Company is $241,000 and to the Telephone Company $10,000.
Two City services for street lighting and traffic signals will
have to be converted to underground services at an estimated
cost off' $1500 for which funds are available from traffic signal
and street lighting operation and maintenance accounts.
As there are no services on private property to be undergrounded,
there will be no costs to abutting property owners.
The utility companies have indicated they can complete the
undergrounding within twelve months after adoption of this
resolution.
Recommendation
It is recommended that the City Council adopt the attached
resolution ordering the removal of poles and overhead wires,
and the undergrounding of these facilities on Broadway between
Twentieth Street and Twenty-sixth Street.
