SUBJECT: Undergrounding of Utilities on Montana Avenue,
17th Street to 26th Street.
As you know, the City Council, at its meeting of February 11, 1869,
approved the "Proposed Priority List - Utility Undergrounding, Revision 2"
as the initial step in implementing our Utility Undergrounding Ordinance
(Ordinance 773 C.C.S,-Section 7900 et seq, SMMC).
Priority No. 1 - Montana Avenue, Ocean Avenue to Lincoln Boulevard -
has been completed. Priority 3 - Stewart Street, Exposition Boulevard to
Pico Boulevard - currently is under construction. Funds sufficient to
finance the next two projects on the priority list (17th Street - Pearl to
Ocean Park Boulevard, and 11th Street, Pico to Ocean Park Boulevard) have
accrued and are available.
However, in lieu of the above projects, it is recommended that pro-
ceedings be initiated for the undergrounding of utilities on Montana Avenue,
between 17th Street and 26th Street (No, g on the Priority List),
Subsequent to the adoption of said Priority List, the County Board
of Supervisors appropriated $77,500 to finance one-half of the cost of
widening Montana Avenue, from 21st Street to 26th Street.
The City Council, at its meeting of October 27, 1970, authorized
the initiation of 1911 Act Proceedings for the installation of modern
street lights, from 17th Street to 26th Street, in connection with the
widening project.
In view of the above, it appears appropriate to advance the priority
of this undergrounding project so that it may be coordinated with the street
widening and the street light installation,
It therefore is recommended that the City Council be requested to
authorize the initiation of proceedings leading to the undergrounding of
utilities on Montana Avenue, from 17th Street to 26th Street, Both the
Edison Company and the General Telephone Company concur in this
recommendation.
If this recommendation is approved, the report concerning estimated
costs, time to complete, etc., as required by Section 7901 of the Municipal
Gode, will be prepared and submitted to the City Council at a subsequent
meeting.
