Grubb, Interim City Manager '~~s°~=~$~~ ~- ~~~~~ra~~ ~~ ~~r, Doug McAteer, City Engineer & Director of Public Work:~~~ z,t~, ~, SUBJECT: Authorizing the Establishment of a 1911 Act Street Lighting District bounded by Montana Avenue-Wilshire Boulevard-Second Street and Euclid Street, As you recall, at the July 10, 1973 Council meeting (Item 7-D), I recommended the establish~,-~ent of a street lighting district bounded by Montana Avenue-Wilshire Boulevard-17th Street and 26th Street. Mrs, Christine Reed raised the objection that the above mentioned district was comprised of single family residences and R-2 (low density) apartments, and that the R-4 districts should be lighted first. The administration was instructed to set up a ne*rr street lighting policy based on crime, and lighting R-4 (high density) apartment areas. I have reexamined the street lighting priorities--with the Council's instructions in mind--and hereby submit a recommended revised street lighting priority for the next three years; 1. 1973°74 - The area bounded by Montana Avenue-Wilshire Boulevard- Second Street and Euclid Street, This project consists of approximately 345 lights at a total estimated cost of X420,000. About 250 of this area is zoned R-4, and the remaining area zoned R-3. 2. 1974-75 - The area bounded by the Freeway, south. City limits, Fourth Street and Lincoln Boulevard. This project consists of approxi- mately 310 lights, at a total estimated cost of X377,000. This area is zoned approximately 50-50 R-2 and R-3, Date: August 23, 1973 Page 2 Subject: Authorizing the Establishment of a lgll Act Street Lighting District bounded by Montana Avenue-Wilshire Boulevard-Second Street and Euclid Street. 3. 1875-76 - The area bounded by Montana Avenue-Santa i•4onica Boulevard-Fourteenth Street and Twenty-first Street. This project con- silts of approximately 31g lights at a total estimated cost of $388,000. This area is zoned R-2 and includes our tea*o hospitals. Attached is a map sho~~ring our existing street lighting system, together ,with the above three lighting priorities. I do not feel it necessary, at this time, for the Council to approve all three priorities due to the fact that circumstances may change in the next year or two, I would prefer to have just this year's district approved at this time. If my recommended No. 1 priority is approved by the Council for this year, I 4aill submit my recom?~endation for the next lighting district about this time next year. If the subject lighting project is approved, the lighting of Montana Avenue, between Seventeenth Street and Twenty-sixth Street, will be included in t'_oe subject project. (This project has had previous approval from the Council). It is therefore recomrended that the City Council be requested to authorize the establishment of a street lighting district bounded by Montana Avenue-Wilshire Boulevard-Second Street and Euclid Street for the 1973-74 fiscal year.
