,~,, SUBJECT: Nighttime re-opening Airport Avenue west gate (Walgrove entrance) and
nighttime closing of east Airport Avenue entrance (Bundy)
'^*','1,
INTRODUCTION:
This is pursuant to the Airport Commission's May 8, 1974 recommendation, to
Council, that the above matter be considered for implementation. (Majority vote,.
3 for and 2 against.)
BACKGROUND:
Councilman Judson, and Commission members Minter and Hoyt, at the regular air-
port commission meetings held April 1U, and May 8, 1974, expressed concern that
Santa pionica Airport's Airport Avenue west gate (Walgrove entrance) was closed
at night to vehicular traffic whereas the east Airport Avenue entrance {Bundy)
was open. The above parties indicated that such an arrangement was an affront
and inconvenience to Santa Mohicans to have to enter the airport from the
Los Angeles east entrance at night. (Note: For security reasons, the west
gate has been closed at 8:30 P. M. and re-opened at 6:00 A. M. This procedure has
been in effect for over 20 years.) The above parties felt the procedure should
be reversed, to wit;
1. Leave the west Airport Avenue entrance open.
2. Close the east Airport Avenue entrance (Bundy) ~~~ e. {~
3. Relocate the Security Guard Station to the Airpo~, u ~ ~`~
gate area. -NAY 2 91974

1. historically the Bundy entrance has been considered the 'main'.
entrance to the Airport.
2. The Bundy entrance is intersection traffic-1aghted, whereas the
west entrance presents somewhat of a traffic dilemma, with a
history of serious auto accidents in the vicinity.
3. During a nighttime major emergency, airport fire, accident, etc.,
if the Bundy entrance were closed the Bundy Fire Station would
have extreme difficulty in coming onto the Airport to assist the
Santa Monica Fire Department.
A. Bundy entrance is far more convenient to freeway. access ttaan the
west entrance, and actually is as com~enient, or more so--to most
Santa Monicans than the west entrance.
5. Relocation of tine Security Guard Station would seriously hamper area
surveillance during the time Guard is at his station.
The Airport Commission, by majority vote; (three for and two against) recommends
the procedure be reversed as outlined..
ALTERNATF, SOLUTIONS:
