Kennedy, Director of Public Ior ,~Rr ~ ~ ~ ; ' {`g SUBJECT: Request for Supplemental Appropriation - ,=~s Mechanical Ntaintenance Division v,,, ' - 19r E; The work load of the Mechanical Maintenance Division,``'~~`w~ys heavy, has been especially so this fiscal year due, among other things, to the need to install certain safety devices required by recent State legislation. These safety devices are itemized below: 1. Modification of air brakes to provide for automatic application of brakes if air pressure is lost. Twenty- five large pieces of equipment are involved in this item. 2. ^lurn indicators must be installed on all towed equip- ment, such as air compressors and small trailers. 3. Defrosting devices must be installed on all three axle vehicles, such as refuse packers, A.C. trucks and refuse transfer vehicle;; tractors. 4. A safety inspection covering all safety devices, at intervals oz" not more than o0 days, together with a written report on the results of said inspection. This will be a continuing obligation on all City-operated mechanized equipment. To aid in keeping up with this work load we have employed an As-Needed Mechanic for the past several months. Our budgeted allocation of funds for As-Needed labor has now been exhausted, due to our needs being underestimated at budget time. In order for us not to fall farther behind in our Mechanical Maintenance operation, it is requested that the City Council be requested to appropriate X3,000 to cover the cost of regular salary and required overtime for one As-Needed Mechanic for the remaining five months of the fiscal year.
