SUBJECT: Planning Commission Recommends the Zoning Ordinance
be Amended to Prohibit Medical and Dental Uses and
Amusement Arcades in the Ml and M2 Industrial Districts.
Introduction
This report transmits the Planning Commission's recommendation
that medical and dental offices and amusement arcades be pro-
hibited in the M1 and M2 Industrial Districts.
Background
Under the present zoning restrictions all office uses and amuse-
ment arcades are permitted in the Ml and M2 Industrial Districts.
The klanning Commission is concerned that the new Santa Monica
business park as well as other similar developments planned for
the City's industrial areas may convert to medical and dental
complexes at the expense of other uses which the Commission and
City Council originally contemplated would be developed. In
order to prevent this the Planning Commission recommends that
the City Council amend the M1 and M2 requirements to prohibit
medical and dental offices as well as amusement arcades in the
industrial districts. If the amendment is approved, medical and
dental offices would be allowed in the industrial districts
only by variance.

Recommendation
It is respectfully recommended that the City Council act favor-
ably upon the Planning Commission's recommendation by directing
the City Attorney to prepare the necessary ordinance and return
it for further Council consideration and action.
