SUBIECT: Montana Branch Library - New Equipment

T have received a requisition from Mr. Helmrieh
requesting the purchase of certain special Library equipment
including Tables, Chairs, Desks and Card Catalog. The total
cost of this equipment will be approximately X2,300.00.
I have discussed this purchase with 14Ir. Helmrieh
and the possibility of using regular tables, chairs and desks
and he is not in favor of any substitution from regular library
type equipment.
I contacted Mr. Biddle, City of Los Angeles Library
Board and he stated that in the past several years only three
(3) suppliers have quoted on like equipment when bids have
been requested by the Gity of Los Angeles. These firms are:
Remington-Rand, Library Bureau, Los Angeles, Calif.
Gaylord Brothers Stockton, Calif.
Lefco Equipment Co. Div. of Library Efficiency Corp.,
Rochester, New York.
I have contacted these three firms and Gaylord
Brothers and Lefco Equipment Company have advised that they
have discontinued the manufacture of Library furniture due to
the present emergency restrictions.
it is my understanding that the present plans are
to open this new branch Library January 2, 1952. G'dill you
please secure City Council approval to waive the call for bids
on this equipment and purchase on the open market as to call for
bids would be an expense and a delay and would be to no email.
