THE FRIENDS OF THE SANTA MONICA PUBLIC LIBRARY
June 7, 1966
To The Mayor and City Council
The Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library have undertaken the
study of the Proposal of the City Manager for closing the Ocean Park Blanch
Library, As a result of their consideration of this matter, the Board of Di-
rectors of the Friends of the Santa Monica Public Library resolved at its reg-
ularly called meeting of June 7, 1966 as follows;
WHEREAS, The business community and the City government have
concerned themselves with the upgrading of the Ocean Park area, witnessed
by the recent seminar sponsored by the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce,
and further by the Re-Development Project sponsored by the City of Santa
Monica, and
WHEREAS, Upgrading the community is augmented by enriching the
cultural facilities in the Ocean Park area, and
WHEREAS, We have found that the recent decline in book circulation
is temporary, and occasioned by two factors, namely, the deferred updating
of the facility itself, and the temporary displacement of people due to the Re-
development Project, and
WHEREAS, There is a direct correlation between attracting the type
of resident and commercial enterprise that the City of Santa Monica finds de-
sireable, and the extent of school and library services, and
WHEREAS, This is the worst possible time of all times, with the im-
pending repopulation of the Ocean Park Re-Development area, to consider
abandoning any facility designed as an asset to the Ocean Park community,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Friends of the Santa
Monica Public Library oppose the abandonment, and/or any temporary clos-
ing of the Ocean Park Branch, and respectfully request that the City Council
maintain the present facilities and services, and further
RESOLVED, That the City Council be urged to formulate plans to
more adequately meet its responsibilities for providing the service and cul-
tural requirements of a growing and improving.~omr~unity,fy
