Jonathan Club Request to Lease l=each .property ~~„ ~ e>
yy ~ ~'~R~
STpyt ~ pF y~ ~~ ~
On wlarch 5, 1962, the Jonathan Club requested a lease o c~,~gxXSS'k ~;
State Beach property westerly from the Club parking lot. The Club
proposed to construct paddle tennis courts and surround the area
with a 12-foot chain link fence. The leased area would be reserved
for the exclusive use of Club me,nbers.
The City Council, on ivIarch 27, 1962, referred the matter to the
Administration for recommendation,
The Recreation Commission was asked for their views on this request.
The unanimous recommendation of the Commission was for denial of
the request. The Commission stated its sympathy for the Club's
desire to improve its private recreation facilities, However, the
Commission is opposed to any action which limits the use of public
beach area to private parties, The Commission also noted that
favorable action on this request would set a precedent for other
property owners adjacent to the beaches to file similar requests.
This office concurs with the Recreation Commission's views and,
therefore, recommends that the City Council deny the request of the
Jonathan Club.

tMe would like to request approval of the City of Santa taSonica
for lease by the J®nathan Club of the property directly west
of the Jonathan Beach C{u6 parking lots in Santa thonica.
We propose to use this area for construction of paddle tennis
courts whioh would be surrounded by a 12° chain link fence.
A sketch indicating the location of these courts is attached
for. your consideration.
As you will note, the courts.<form a contiguous area with
respect to property already uti9ized by members of the Jona-
than Beach Club.
Inasmuch as the Jonathan Club has over 3,500 members, plus
their families, t#aere wiPl be wide use by a large number of
people and the courts 4vili present a pleasing appearance.
This step is being taken in order to continue to offer our
membership comparable facilities with other beach clubs in
