(Copies attached) INTRODUCTION: This report addresses itself to the above proposed Air Race from Santa Monica Municipal Airport to Cleveland - August 21, 1979, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1929 first transcontinental A11 Women's Air Derby which flew from this airfield August 18, 1929. BACKGROUND: Santa Monica Municipal Airport is steeped in Aviation history, providing many "Firsts" in the field of Aviation; i.e. First 'round the taorld flight'; First all Women's Transcontinental Air Derby; First in airline aircraft, etc. It therefore is only fitting that the 50th anniversary of such an event as the Women's Transcontinental Air Race would again originate at this airfield, as outlined in the attached letter requests. (Copies attached) The Airport Commission at its regular meeting Wednesday, March 14, 1979; recognizing the historic event formally considered the request and recommends Council approval of same, (Subject to sponsor indemnifying City in an amount satisfactory to City Attorney).
