sr-092270-8b*,,~ CITY OF SANTA MON(CA ti\'°v ,~ I T ~ DATE: September 16, 1970 TO: Perry Scott, City Manager FROM: J. F. Hutchison, Director of Transportation SUBJECT: EXTENSION OF BUS SERVICE TO MALIBU AREA ~; At the present time Greyhound provides a total of eight trips daily {four in each direction), between Santa ;tonica and the Malibu area. Seven of these trips occur between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 7:00 p,m. On Septem- ber 2, 1970, our Supervisors checked these seven trips for passenger activity between Santa Monica and Malibu Canyon. Their reports show a total of 20 passengers for the seven trips, or an average of three passengers per trip® The maximum number of passengers on any one trip was five. The above figures merely confirm th.e opinion of the Transportation Depart- ment that the population density along the area under consideration is simply insufficient to support regular daily bus service, tae have had no indication of any substantial demand for our service from the regular daily commuter, who is so necessary to the success of any bus route. In fact, the Transportation Department has received no direct contact recently from anyone concerning daily bus service to the ilalibu area, Most of the comments which we have heard indirectly, concern prospective passengers who would use the bus when their automobile breaks down, when, the family automobile is otherwise in use, or to go shopping or visit the Doctor, etc. ttao or three times per month. Although we welcome with open arms-this type of rider on our BIG BLUE BUSES, it is nevertheless a fact that this type of "occasional" rider alone can seldom support a bus route of any length, and especially so when another carrier (Greyhound) is already oper- ating in the area. In order for the proposed service to be economically feasible, we n;ould re- quire a minimum of fifteen passengers at an average fare of 50 cents per passenger for the thirteen mile trip between Santa Monica and Malibu Canyon. If any community group in the Malibu area is interested in working with us on the possibility of setting up a daily trip, or trips, based on the above minimum guarantee, we would be most happy to meet and work with them.. %/ / J.
