R-10527City Council Meeting 9-14-10 Santa Monica, Caiifornia RESOLUTION NUMBER 10527 (CCS) (City Council Series) A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DESIGNATING SEPTEMBER 25, 2010 AS THE FIRST ANNUAL EUNICE KENNEDY SHRIVER DAY WHEREAS, Saturday, September 25, 2010, has been designated as the first Global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day, an annual celebration of her work on behalf of people with intellectual disabilities and a global call for action continuing that work; WHEREAS, this celebration will spread Eunice Kennedy Shriver's legacy and promote the movement that she founded in her backyard, almost fifty years ago, with an inclusive sports camp; and WHEREAS, as the founder of the Special Olympics movement and an avid supporter of Best Buddies, Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the leading international advocate for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities; and WHEREAS, in awarding her the-first Sportsman of the Year Legacy Award, Sports Illustrated magazine called her " ... one of those revolutionaries who saw opportunity where others saw barriers, someone who started a movement and changed a world" and WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver's revolutionary actions caused people throughout the world to open their minds and apprehend the gifts and talents of individuals with intellectual disabilities: and WHEREAS, her achievement demonstrates that a single unrelenting and indomitable spirit, animated by a fierce love for others and for justice, can improve the lives of those who have been neglected and ignored; WHEREAS, Eunice Kennedy Shriver's lasting legacy must be our continued commitment to improve and transform the lives of the millions of people worldwide who have intellectual disabilities and. who are shunned, hidden away, and confined by societal inaction to lives devoid of opportunity; and WHEREAS, to continue this legacy, on September 25th, thousands of people around the world will commit to perform Eunice Kennedy Shriver Acts (EKS Acts) of kindness and unity by, among other things, inviting a person with intellectual disabilities to lunch, volunteering in a special education classroom or vocational center, conducting an awareness campaign at a local business or school, becoming a coach for the Special Olympics, or simply offering support to a parent of a child with intellectual disabilities; and WHEREAS, the City of Santa Monica has long been committed to protecting the rights of disabled persons; and WHEREAS, supporting Eunice Kennedy Shriver day will further that commitment; 2 NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. The City of Santa Monica recognizes and supports the designation of September 25, 2010 as Global Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day and urges individuals and families to contact their local Special Olympics program and volunteer, visit www.eksday.org and otherwise participate in the global effort to promote acceptance and inclusion of and unity with people with intellectual disabilities. SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
