Dear Mayor Shrives and Councilmembers:
At itsJuneand July Commission meetings, your Recreation and Parks Commission held discussions
regarding various initiatives to promote bicycling in Santa Monica. The Commission is aware that you
allocated $25,000 in the FY 2010/11 budget for bicycle education and we laud this action as the first of
many efforts to further the goal of Santa Monica as a community that prioritizes bicycling as a primary
trarisportation mode and recreational activity.
The Commission feels that the time has come far the City to take a key leadership role on this issue that
is resonating throughout the community. The Commission supports the efforts of the Transportation
Management Division and other City divisions in the efforts to date and urges support of the
development of a Bicycle Action Plan which has to a be a priority in order to move forward in earnest.
At its June meeting, the Commission unanimously supported a motion that the Council and City staff
consider abike-sharing program as a priority in a Master Plan. At its July meeting, following a
presentation by Commissioner McKinnon regarding a proposal to close Main Street from Colorado
Avenue to the southern City limits on October S0, 2010 for a Ciclovia event, the Commission
unanimously adopted a motion in support of the Ciclovia concept to close a city street to vehicular
traffic for a set period of hours to allow for use by pedestrians, bicyclists, skateboarders and others. In
its motion the Commission requested that a discussion of this idea 6e placed on a future Council
agenda.
Sincerely,
r-~? ~~- tt~~ ~~
