To Whom It May Concern
We are contacting you on behalf of the SAGE team of Santa Monica High School's Regional
Occupational Program (ROP) to request your financial support. This past weekend; on May 29t", the
ROP SAGE (Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreheurship) team from Santa Monica
High School competed against other student teams from across the country, and the Santa Monica
High team emerged as the SAGE National Champions! As National Champions, the students have
earned the privilege of representing the United States of America in the SAGE World Cup competition
to be held in Cape town, South Africa during the last week of July 2010.
The SAGE World Cup event will allow these eleven amazing students to showcase and demonstrate
their entrepreneurial success in an international arena. SAGE is an international network that (inks
secondary school student organizations to mentors from local universities and businesses. Its
purpose is to advance global entrepreneurship in an ethical and socially-responsible mariner. SAGE
provides high school students from throughout the world with an opportunity to create business and
social ventures to improve their communities and showcase their efforts on the world stage. In
working on their projects, students improve their knowledge of business, financial management,.
economics and free enterprise, while also improving their leadership, teamwork and communication
skills. Each high school team is judged on for-profit and social entrepreneurship, global learning and
outreach, civic engagement, environmental responsibility, use of college mentors and use of a
business advisory board.
This year, we have the honor of working with a truly diverse student team who are Asian, Caucasian,
and Latino. The students range iri academic success from high to Idw-achieving, with the low-
achieving having worked hard to qualify to be part of the team. From economically-disadvantaged to
middle-class, this team of dedicated students has supported each other through multiple fund-raisers
to be able to compete at the state level in San Francisco, CA, then again nationally in Buffalo, NY.
Students have been raising money since September 2009, and individual financial resources have
now been exhausted in winning the two previous competitions. In addition to the short time between
notification of winning. the national championship in late May and the start of the international
competition in late July, the students are under the stress of completing the school year. Amidst the
final examinations and the. culminating projects, eight of the students are preparing for high school
graduation. and the transition to college. Traditionally, ROP and the Santa Monica -Malibu School
District has provided educational opportunities for under-served student populations. However, with
recent budget cuts and financial crises, they are unable to aid the students financially on this trip.
The cost for the eleven national team members and their four teacher/advisors to travel to the World
Cup event is approximately $4,000 per person. This educational trip of a lifetime cannot become a
reality without help from people like you. Please take this opportunity to support the SAGE team in
their bid to represent the United States at the World Cup event.
To support the U.S. champion team in its endeavor o become international champions, please
complete the attached information and return with your contribution. Checks should be made payable
to Santa Monica High School/SAGE team.
Donations of any amount are appreciated. Contributions are tax deductible to the full extent allowed
by the Internal Revenue Service (Tax Ip Number 95-6002855).
