A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DENOUNCING ARIZONA'S ANTI-IMMIGRATION,
LAW SUSPENDING OFFICIAL TRAVEL TO THE STATE OF ARIZONA AND
DEVELOPING ADDITIONAL FINANCIAL SANCTIONS UNTIL SUCH TIME AS THE
NEW LAW IS REVOKED
WHEREAS, On April 23, 2010, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law
Senate Bill 1070 (Pearce) which requires State and Local police officers to question
people about their immigration status if'there is "reasonable suspicion" they are in the
country illegally; and
WHEREAS, This new law makes being in Arizona without proper documentation
a crime urider State law and also targets those who hire -and knowingly transport
immigrant day laborers, and
WHEREAS, This new law aims to identify, prosecute and deport immigrants who
will also face fines of up to $2,500 and up to six months in jail, and

WHEREAS, Previously, law enforcement personnel in Arizona could check a
person's immigration status only if that person was reasonably suspected of committing
a crime; and
WHEREAS, Many civil libertarians, immigrant-rights groups and others believe
that this new law will spur racial profiling and harassment, and
WHEREAS, Over the course of its history, Santa Monica has repeatedly and
consistently demonstrated its commitment to human rights, and
WHEREAS, Many immigrants and immigrant families live or work in Santa
Monica; and
WHEREAS, With an official ban by the City of Santa Monica on travel to the
State of Arizona, and a review of all current and likely future contracts with Arizona-
based businesses to examine the feasibility of acquiring such products and services
elsewhere until the law is revoked, Santa Monica can stand in solidarity with all those
who seek rational common sense immigriation reform in Arizona and the United States.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA
DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The City Council of the City of Santa Monica hereby denounces
Arizona's anti-immigration law and calls upon the City Manager to immediately suspend
a..
official travel to the State of Arizona and develop additional financial sanctions until such
time as the new law is revoked.
SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this Resolution, and
thenceforth and thereafter the same shall be in full force and effect.
