Jackman, Chief of Police Subject: Appropriation of $111,644 of State Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) Funding Recommended Action Staff recommends that the City Council appropriate funds in the amount of $100,000 of 2008 State COPS funding and $11,644 of related interest earnings. Executive Summary COPS grant funding is provided for front-line law enforcement expenses that are not funded as part of the normal budget process. Staff will return to Council for designation of programs for the funds. Discussion State Citizens' Option for Public Safety (COPS) funds are provided to local jurisdictions to help finance front-line law enforcement expenses. that are. not funded from the jurisdiction's regular budgeting process. In previous years, State COPS funds have been utilized to purchase mobile computers, digital recorders, digital negotiation equipment, license plate reader and specialized electronic equipment. The City has received annual State COPS funds allocations since 1996. A jurisdiction's use of funds received must be formally appropriated and designated by the jurisdiction's governing body at a public meeting.) 1 The Police Department will designate use of the 2008 State COPS funding at a later date and will return to Council for approval.
