Projects B, ~, J, and L of exhibit 51 of the Public
6~/orks P~~Iaster Plan propase a ne;v ~andscapino of the subject area
over the next lour years. The estimates sho..vn for this ~~rcrk
include removal of stunted Coral trees and replanting faith new
stock, sprinkler system, and turfing,
',+ie have received so ;many ideas from lay citizens as
to ho~v the subject area should be landscaped, some of arhich may
be sound proposals, that it was considered advisable to ask a
cornrrittee of exx~erts in the field of landscape architecture and
plant pathology to recommend a planting treatment to the City.
Such a comr,~ittee was selected ~rrhich included, Frederick
RoeUVekamp, Park Development Supervisor and City ,'+orester, City of
Los Angeles, John Marasco; Park Superintendent, City of Beverly
Hills, Professor Pierre ~+Iiller, Plant Pathologist, LT.C.L>A.,
Jack Evans, Landscape Architect, and Erwin L. Troeger, Park
Superintendent, Santa Mon; ca.
These gentlemen met on tray 16 to study the present
planting and reasons ,any some of the Corals are stunted. After
cOn3l.derable discussion of various alternate landscape treatments,
the COmmitt6e llnanimOUSly spread Oi, th,e foilOLVing reCOmmendationo
{1) Remove stunted Corals, prune back and set in
nursery tc see if they will recover for use in other areas of the
city.
{c) Purchase new Coral tree stock to re~olace the 45
stunted trees and plant in excavated hole appre:cimately 3' x 3' x 3'
filled with imported top soil,
(3) Set redwood headers around each Coral tree to form
area measuring 10' x l0' and cover with 3J4 inch crushed rock 2"
in depth.
(4} iiaae native soil analyzed to determine whether it
has necessary properties for growing turf ground cover.
