As you know, 11th Street, 14th Street, and
17th Street (among others) cross the Santa Monica
Freeway on bridges. The State, in designing these
bridges, has called for them to be constructed to the
full width necessary to accommodate the future street
widening provided in our Master Plan.
The State, however, cannot widen the street
between the bridge and the next cross street. Their
regulations provide that they construct a 30 to 1 taper
from the end of the bridge to where such taper inter-
sects the existing curb. The City, at the time of
future street widening, must remove this taper at City
expense. This condition will prevail at 11th, 14th and
17th Streets between the Freeway and Michigan Avenue, and
on 14th Street between the Freeway and Olympic Boulevard.
In order to avoid this additional expense, and
to provide for these important streets to be fully widened
between Olympic Boulevard and Michigan Avenue, the State
has agreed to eliminate this taper and instead construct
a fully widened street for the full length of the tapered
section, provided that the City will agree to widen the
remainder of the street (to the next intersection)
concurrently with the State's construction.
The estimated cost of the above work is $15,500.
The expenditure will not need to be made until the 1964-65
fiscal year.
It is recommended that the City Council be re-
quested to indicate its approval of the program outlined
above, with the understanding that these funds will be
programmed in the 1964-65 budget of the Street Division.
