Request of Mayor Genser that the Council direct city staff to return with an interim
ordinance including "pawnbrokers" in the list of permitted uses in the C-3 and C-3C
zoning districts.
Currently, the zoning code permits pawnbrokers only in the BSC (Bayside) zoning
districts. The city's sole existing pawnbroker must relocate from its current premises in
the Bayside District because the building it occupies is part of the Mayfair Theatre
complex that will soon undergo reconstruction. Existing zoning only permits this
business to relocate to that portion of the downtown between 2nd and 4th Streets. The
requested ordinance would expand the options for relocating this business to most
other locations in the downtown area. A map of the downtown zoning districts is
attached.
