SUBJECT: Temporary Access to Ocean Park Amusement Zone
As a result of a recent request from the Ocean Park Associa-
tion of Cormnerce to improve vehicular access to the Ocean
Park Amusement zone, this office has developed a proposed
plan to eliminate the present undesirable approach to this
area via Ocean Park Boulevard and the Speedway.
The plan involves constructing a 10' wide, low cost, pave-
ment on the west side of the existing Speedway, from Pier
Avenue to Ashland Avenue, to increase the roadway width
to 30' and provide for two-way traffic. It also involves
constructing a 20' wide strip of pavement on the south side
of Ashland Avenue, which will increase the width of Ashland
Avenue sufficiently to provide both ingress to, and egress
from, the Jacks At the Beach and the beach. parking lots.
Attached hereto is a sketch showing this proposed construe-
tion. The estimated cost of this work is $2,500.
This proposed plan will permit traffic destined for the
Ocean Park Amusement area and the beach parking lots to
enter and leave via Pier Avenue, with only two blocks of
the Speedway having to be traversed before leaving the
parking lots.
This access can be maintained operable during the construc-
tion of the storm drain project in Ashland Avenue, currently
scheduled for construction in January, 196'0. It also will
be operable during the construction of Barnard Way, from
Ashland Avenue northwesterly, currently scheduled to start
in March, 1966.
It is recommended that the City Council be requested to
appropriate $2,500 to finance the cost of this construction
and to authorize its immediate construction by contract.
