The subject item was added to the Pending TYtatters by
Council action Decen~oer 14, 1865 (Item 8-F ).
It was the Council's desire to exolo-re the possibility
of merchant cooperation in a floodlighting system to
avoid the expenditure of an estimated ~i27,000 for the
installation of a modern me-rcucjJ vapor system.
Subsequently, the floodlights that had been temporarily
installed by the City, during the Mall construction, on
the fronts of Borne buildings facing on the Mall, to
illuminate the construction area, have been installed
on the 2nd and 3rd Court frontages to improve the light-
ing of these alleys. A total of 12 - 1500 4~att lights
has been installed, as follows
2 - in 1200 block, both 2nd and 3rd Courts
2 - in 1300 block, both 2nd and 3rd Courts
2 - in 1400 block, both 2nd and 3rd Courts
electrical energy costs for these lights are being borne
by the City.
In addition to the above lights, the parking structures,
under construction and proposed, each are to be equipped
with outside floodlights to illuminate the adjacent alley.
It is the opinion of this office that the level of i1l;unina-
tion resulting from, the above will be adequate. In addition,
the alignment of the rear frontages of the buildings facing
on these alleys is so irregular as to make it virtually
impossible to provide a properly designed building-mounted
floodlight system.
It therefore is recommended that this matter be dropped.
