SUBSECT: Access from the Pacific Coast Highway to the California Incline for Northbound Traffic In reviewing the attached report by the Director of Public Works, it appears reasonably certain that the cost of any alternative, except possible access to the California Incline, is prohibitive. Even in this instance, the estimated cost is in excess of $100,000 and may potentially run as high as $250,000. In the event the City Council is disposed to spend funds of this magnitude for such access, it is requested that the Council authorize the retention of consulting soils and structural engineers for the purpose of a more complete study and a more precise cost estimate. Since the opening of the Freeway, the number of motorists who have missed the Lincoln Boulevard turn-off because of inadequate signing has been quite substantial. We are currently surveying the number of traffic citations and complaints to the Automabile Club for the purpose of obtaining a modification of such signing devices. It is our opinion that the placing of a "Last Santa Monica Exit" sign on the 11th Street crossing structure would eliminate the major share of the motorists who have assumed that there would be additional access to Santa Monica. In the event this proves to be true, it would seem that there would be little necessity for the expenditure of additional funds for access to Ocean Avenue from the Pacific Coast Highway. -/ ~; `" i r PS/cc `~ -P~RRYlSCOTT City Manager c. c.
