This is a follow up letter in reference to a letter written to you on October 23, i9n9, regard a very dangerous traffic intersection at 6th St. and Pico B)vd., which is opposite one of the main entrances to the Santa Monica High School. I am writing this as Chairman of the Safety Committee of .the Pilot Club of Santa Monica, Inc, which is a Civic minded club and is a service organization which has a membership of about 43 members being professional women of Santa Monica. We sponsor scholarships for business career minded students, etc. and have for many years. Through the members of the Pilot Club of Santa Monica, Inc. and the Safety Committee, we request and stress the serious need of an automatic three-way traffic signal at the corner of-6th St. and Pico Blvd. as above mentioned. The letter of October 23, i9b9, was sent to the Santa Monica City Council, to City Manager Perry Scott and to Mr. James Wrenn, Parking and Traffic Manager. 4Je received a reply from the City Manager on November 13, 1969, a copy of which is enclosed, along with a copy of tfie letter sen€ to the City Council and to Mr. James Wrenn, Parking,& Traffic Manager. Said letter was dated October 23, 1909. ~; I wor!< for Panoramic Builders Corp, in.an office at the Southeast corner of 6th St. & Pico, and have seen many accidents that occured at the top of the hill at said corner, while this building was under construction and for the past 1 1/2 years. 0 personally have had the experience as a pedestrian trying to cross Pico Blvd, at 6th St, in the pedestrian section and hoped to get on the opposite side of the street safely because the fast traffic and hot rodders on Pico keepi~-goino even-.though a pedestrian is over half way across the street. One noon I almost saw 2 high school students (a boy & a girl) killed,. one car zoomed Eastward and a truck zoomed Westward and these students escaped death by a hair. Both vehicles drove too fast so ! was unable to get their ,, ' license number. I have seen several accidents on this corner, ambulances came by,some people were badly injured, some cars were towed away, yes Police were , called and many times just the screeching bbfbrakes, cars dented badly and the Police were not called, and the drivers handled the details. It is inevitable that one of these days some innocent pedestrian or drivers will be kilted on this corner before the City of Santa Monica installs an automatic traffic signal on. this corner. I hope and pray that this never occurs. More on page 2 Page 2, 'Sant,a Monica City Council In my estimation the corner of tith St. b Pico should be the absolute number one spot for the City of Santa Monica to install a 3 way automatic signal because: A) Numerous High School students cross the street at this point and some do not even look to see whether any traffic is coming. 8) It is very difficult to judge the speed of the car coming up the hill (East) when one is going West on Pico with the intent of turning South on oth Street. Many people step on the gas quickly to get out of-the way of the Eastbound traffic on Pico and to say the least, one takes his own life in his hands making a turn South on 6th Street from Pico, because traffic does not always obey the speed limit near the school on Pico. C) Traffic is heavy on Pico and most of it beyond the speed limit. My Safety Committee wishes to go on record requesting that this particular corner of 6th and Pico Blvd, be put on a first priority for an automatic 3 way traffic signal.. True, materiai damage can be repaired or replaced BUT A LIFE CAN NEVER BE REPLACED. Thank you for your courtesy and consideration in this matter. The"first one is located at the corner of 6th and Pico. This has only an arterial stop sign. As this crossing is used by school children and their safety is so important, we recormmend that an automatic signal be installed with athree-way setting, GO for East-West traffic, GO for North traffic, and a WALK for the Pedestrian traffic. The second location is at Cloverfield and Kansas,. This particular crossing has no marking to warn the motorist that he is approaching - a crosswalk, that leads directly into the parking lot of the Thrifti- mart Grocery. We recommend that tl~e street be painted with PFD RING and lighted signs to warn on-coming traffic. It has-been noted by one o£ our members who lives near this .area, that pedestrian traffic is very heavy at times. No doubt, statistics are being 'kept on the number of`accidehts and other incidents at"these locations, however, the thought is appalling that action may not be taken until there is a fatality.
