You will recall that the City Council, at its
meeting of October 8, 1968, approved the recommendations
of the Traffic F~igineer relative to the improvements
required to alleviate the traffic congestion on Twenty-
sixth Street and on Cloverfield Boulevard north of the
Santa Monica Freeway ramps,
Among the improvements approved was the widen-
ing of Cloverfield Boulevard from the Freeway to Santa
Monica Boulevard.
Design studies have shown that the extent of
the structure remodeling that would be required to widen
Cloverfield Boulevard, as recommended northwest of the
approximate midpoint of the block between Colorado and
Broadway, would be excessive and beyond our ability to
finance at this time.
The project, therefore, has been set up iri
stages, with Stage I to include the following:
1. Widening to a roadway width of 60 feet
from the Freeway to the approximate
midpoint of the block between Colorado
and Broadway.
2. Transitioning at this point to a 48-foot
width within the existing 60-foot right
of way.
3. widening to a 48-foot roadway width from
the end of the transition to Broadway.
The above work will provide f~ two moving
lanes in each direction from Broadway southeasterly,. and
will provide a satisfactory transition to the existing
40-foot roadway north of Broadway.

Subject: Cloverfield Boulevard widening
At such time as traffic volumes warrant and
available funds will permit, we would continue the widen-
ing, to a 60-foot roadway width, to Santa Monica Boulevard
(Stage II).
Since the cost of property acquisition and
structure remodeling appears to be considerably greater
on the west side of the street than on the east, we
presently propose to shift the alignment of this portion
of the roadway easterly so that all of the property
required for widening would be taken from the east side
of the street. This will require the acquisition of 16
feet of property.
In order to prevent the construction of struc-
tures on this property prior to the street widening, it is
recommended that the City Council be requested to instruct
the Planning Commission to institute the proceedings required
to establish a 16-foot setback on the northeast side of
Cloverfield Boulevard, from Broadway to Santa Monica Boule-
vard.
