SR-100973-4B73-C-102 CITY OF SANTA MONICA t7ATE: October 9, 1973 ~°~' ~~~~~~ ~ ~s ( TO: The honorable City Council ~~ I ~ 1y~3 ~--~ .Tests 1NIi15T >3E FROM: Interim City Manager RETURNED To THE C77Y CLERK'S OFFICE . FDR FaLtNaa. SUBJECT: Santa Monica Cab Company--Request for a Rate Increase At tonight's meeting a hearing (Item 4B) is scheduled on the above. Mr. Davis, President, Santa Monica Cab Company, has submitted a letter, dated Septem- ber 26, 1973, to each of you outlining the reasons for his request. Attached hereto is a schedule of taxicab rates row in effect in various cities together with the requested increase for Santa Monica, as well as one for the City of Los Angeles that is to be considered by the Los Angeles City Council tomorrow. From the schedules shown it appears that the basic mile rate is as follows: Beverly Hills $1. 00 (1-1/5 mile) Culver City $1. 10 Inglewood $1. 10 (1-1/30 mile) - Los Angeles (Yellow Cab) $1. 00 (1-17/60 mile) Santa Monica $l. 00 Santa Monica (requested) $1.30 (1-1/7 mile) Los Angeles City (requested) $1. 10 I would like to point out that the requested rate would increase the fare for " the first mile about thirty (30) cents. In addition thereto Mr. Davis is request- ing alive meter; that is, each time traffic moves at less than seven or eight miles per hour an additional charge of lOF per minute would accrue. If the request (rate hike plus live meter) is granted Santa Monica would have the higlhest far1e in the area. / / /'ii,// . ~GRUBB Interim City Manager KOG:lk SCHEDULE OF TAXI RATES FOR SURROUNDING SANTA MONICA AREA G ity Beverly Hills Culver City Basic Rate 60~ first 2/5 mile 60~ first 1/3 mile Additional Mileage 20~ each additional 2/5 mile 10~` each additional 1/6 mile Ingl ewoo d Los Angeles (Yellow Cab Co. ) (Valley Cab Co. ) (West Coast Trans.) Records indicate that, at 1--,is request and after a public hearing, the maximum rate allowed to be charged was increased by Ordinance 901 and became effective on December 12, 1972. Municipal Code Section 6430 provides that a public hearing shall be held regarding any increase in rates and accordingly ~t is suggested that a date for a public hearing be set at which time all interested persons may appear and be heard. Naturally after the hearing it will be up to the Council's determination whether or not a rate increase is justifiable. + ~~~G~ , K. O.
