SR-111108-1ECity Council Meeting: November 11, 2008
Agenda Item: I®
To: Mayor and City Council
From: Joan Akins, Acting Director of Community Maintenance
Subject: Donation of Interceptor Scooter to Santa Monica High School
Baseball/Athletics Department
Recommended Action
Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the City Manager to donate one used
Interceptor Traffic Scooter to the Santa Monica High School Baseball Team/Athletic
Department.
Executive Summary
The City of Santa Monica regularly rotates the oldest, high mileage vehicles out of the
fleet when they are no longer economical to maintain due to the cost and frequency of
repairs. A replacement vehicle has already been purchased and this used vehicle is
waiting for final disposition (auction). All City logos and identifying markings will be
removed from the vehicle prior to delivery to Santa Monica High School. The City
Council has previously approved donations of used City vehicles to other entities,
including the State of Sinaloa, Mexico, the City of Mazatlan, Mexico, and Santa Monica
High School. The Interceptor which was requested by Santa Monica High School will be
used to "rake" or "smooth" the baseball infield.
Discussion
Use of this scooter with a field rake will not only help prevent player injuries by keeping
the area smooth and free of holes, rocks and-other debris but will improve the overall
quality of play. Contributing toward the physical education of SAMOHI students is
consistent with the City's "Lifelong Learning" community philosophy.
