13-J: Request of Councilmember McKeown that the Council congratulate the
130-member Samohi Marching Band on its invitation to participate in this
year's 23rd annual New Year's Day Parade and Festival in London,
England; and that the Council contribute $25,000 from the Council
contingency fund to the Santa Monica Band Parents Association (a
California non-profit corporation, separate from the school district] to
support financial assistance for Viking Band members from low-income
families.

The Santa Monica ITigh School Matching Band has beery invited topariicipate in a once in a lifelime
experience: to perform in the New Yeats Ihy Parade January i, 2009, in London, England, as well as
giving a public concert there.
The Santa Monica 1$gh School MarchurgBand, established in 1915, is one ofthe oldest high school
matching bands in California It has a rich heritage due to the outstanding iri5huctioq a long history of
community support, and its proximiTy to the entedainmert indrntxy and premiere West Coast artistic
convrnniry.
An eight day, sevennighttour will provide ors 130 talented musicians the opprn4nity to
representing theEity ofSantrMoniq before avdi~es in 1-.ondai~ Since dteparade-r`s H
Europe, they wiU receive exposure all overthe comment as well.

Maching Band daily fixthis oppottmiity. The Santa Monica High School Marching Band program is open
to all snrdems who are wilting to go through the rigors ofan itrteasive 2 week, 8 hor¢perday Summa
Camp, early morning and allemoon rehearsals throughout fhe fall semester, and Weekend Competitions

competitions, and has the storms as one ofthe premier Matching Bands in the State of California
