As you know, the City has acquired, for the
expansion of woodlawn Cemetery, the property fronting on
the east side of 14th Street between Michigan Avenue and
the existing cemetery property (Lots 2 to 16 inclusive,
Block 3, Erkenbrecker Syndicate Santa Monica Tract}.
Lots 2, 4, 6 and 8 were leased back to Jose
Gallegos, said lease expiring on April 30, 1970. Mr.
Gallegos currently is constructing a new building in
which to conduct his business, and the entire property
should be available for clearing and preparing for cemetery
use by the end of May, 1970.
Tile are virtually out of grave sites available
for public sale at woodlawn: (as of April 1, 1970, there
were only 82 unsold public grave sites remaining}. In
addition, because of the safety hazard involved in
preparing graves for double intexments adjacent to recent
burials, the Cemetery Superintendent is being forced in
many cases to discontinue approval of this practice. In
view of the above, it is in the public interest to prepare
this property for cemetery use as soon as possible.
The proposed expansion program involves removing
the existing structures, clearing and grading the area,
turfing, installation of sprinkler system, fencing, etc.
In addition, the existing alley {14th Court} will be
improved to provide an access roadway to the new area,
and will be extended southerly past the maintenance building
to join with the main cemetery drive (Delaware Avenue}.
Certain building and work area remodeling also will be
required.
It has been determined that approximately 2220
graves 40" x 8~, and 250 "`cremains" plots 24"' x 24 ', will
be made available by this construction.

Land acquisition costs have previously been
financed. Funds to finance the actual construction have
not yet been made available. These costs, as outlined
above, are estimated at $55,520.
Therefore, it is recommended that the City
Council be requested to appropriate $55,520 to finance
the construction of this final phase of the cemetery
