SUBJECT: Woodlavm Cemetery
It is requested that the City Council be asked to reconsider its
action on two items involved in the Cemetery expansion proposal
approved at the August 11 meeting, as follows:
(1) Sale of burial vaults. Burial vaults are offered to all
'customers by all mortuaries.at the time funeral arrangements are
made. If the "customer" tirants one he buys it from the mortuary
at that time.
Since in almost all cases the mortuary arrangements are made before
the "customer" comes to the cemetery, our volume of sales vrould be
extremely small. They would be limited to cases where the "customer"
either changed his mind after leaving the mortuary, or came to the
cemetery before going to the mortuary. Both contingencies are quite
remote.
Tr7e are not presently equipped to handle burial vaults, since arrange-
ments for their placement are made directly by the mortuary,
It therefore is recommended that the Council rescind its action
requiring us to engage in the sale of burial vaults.
(2) Opening and Closing charges, sectional box charges and charges
fo-r Saturday interments. The Council's action was to have the
new rates recommended by Mr. Kingsley apply to Block 19 only, This
is acceptable as far as lot sales are concerned, since less than 70
graves remain unsold in the rest of the cemetery. However, since
hundreds of graves in these other sections have been sold as "pre-need"
graves and are not yet occupied, it is essential that the increased
charges for opening and closing, sectional boxes, and Saturday
interments apply to the entire cemetery,
It therefore is recommended that the Council change its action Qn
this item to conform to the above.
