Council Meeting: March 11, 1986 Santa Monica, California
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: City Staff
SUBJECT: Sponsor for 1986 Adult Basketball League at Memorial Park
INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that Fruit-A-Freeze of Santa Fe Springs be
permitted to co-sponsor the Recreation and Parks Department Summer
Basketball League. The Recreation and Parks Commission unanimously
approved the sponsorship at their meeting of February 20, 1986.
BACKGROUND
Over 100,000 people per year play drop-in basketball at Memorial Park
Gymnasium. These people are primarily economically disadvantaged. The
Recreation and Parks Department provides a cost covering fall/winter
basketball league at a cost of $450 per team at Santa Monica High
School. This entry fee covers the cost for officials, gym rental,
scorekeepers and awards. Due to this high cost, many people who use
Memorial Park Gym are unable to participate in league play. Many of
these young adults do not have the resources to pay for recreational
activities of this nature. Fruit-A-Freeze of Santa Fe Springs, a fruit
drink company, has agreed to co-sponsor $1,500 of the league cost
(approximately $2,700) to provide an organized league at Memorial Park.
The Recreation and Parks Department would like to open up the Memorial

Gym from 9 am to 12 noon on Sundays, starting in June, to conduct this
league. Currently, the facility is closed at this time. With this
co-sponsorship, league fees could be reduced to $150 per team far an
eight team league. In return for the sponsorhhip, Fruit-A-Freeze would
like to hang two of their banners in the gym during league play and
also distribute products to the league participants.
ALTERNATIVES
Staff has sought over time to find a way to offer a low-cost basketball
league to people living in the Memorial Park area who frequent the gym.
Several business and athletic companies have been contacted regarding
such co-sponsorship. It is doubtful that another sponsor could be
found who could meet all the necessary approval procedures in time to
adequately promote the event this summer. Without a sponsor, cost of
league play would be too high for most of the participants.
BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL IMPACT
This basketball league will be run on a cost covering basis with all
expenses incurred to be paid by the sponsor and league entry fees.
This league cost is already included in the 1986-87 Recreation and
Parks budget request. The approval of this recommendation will have no
budgetary impact.
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommends that the City Council approve the co-sponsorship and
authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract with Fruit-A-Freeze
to sponsor a summer Adult Basketball League at Memorial Park.
