SR-031186-6LPU:EOB:fmj Council Meeting of March 11, 1986 T0: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL FROM: CITY STAFF - (~ MAR 11 1986 MAR 2 , 1986 Santa Monica, California SUBJECT: Recommendation for the Disposal of One 1969 Crown Snorkel, Aerial Platform Fire Truck, Serial 4~F1610. Introduction This report concerns the disposal of a surplus 1969 Crown Snorkel Fire Truck for the Fire Department. Background The Santa Monica Fire Department has determined that a Crown Snorkel Fire Truck, purchased in 1969, should be considered a surplus piece of City equipment, as it no longer efficiently meets City fire protection needs. It will be replaced by a new unit scheduled for delivery April, 1986. A total of thirteen informal bid requests were sent to various dealers and fire equipment companies. However, only two informal bids were received for this unit. The high bid was only $555. Staff did not believe this informal bid was representative of the value of the equipment. The informal bidders were therefore notified the City did not accept their informal bids. During a regular meeting of a safety organization for California fire of- ficials, a Santa Monica Fire Department official announced that the City had a fire truck for sale. At that meeting, a Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District official indicated interest in the - 1 - L0 - L MAR 11 1986 l~AR ~ ~ 1936 item. Subsequently, the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District has offered twenty thousand dollars for the fire truck. Staff contacted fire equipment dealers for an appraised value of the truck. The dealers stated that there is not much of a market far equipment of this age in an urban area. The dealers contacted felt that the $20,000 offered by the Mammoth Lake Fire Protection District was a reasonable offer. The Mammoth Lakes Fire Protec- tion understands that the 1969 Crown Snorkel will not be released until the new unit has arrived. Therefore, staff recommends that the City agree to the sale of the 1969 Crown Snorkel to the Mam- moth Lakes Fire Protection District. Recommendation It is recommended that the City Manager be authorized to execute an agreement selling the 1969 Crown Snorkel Fire Truck (serial #F1610) to the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District.
