SR-040886-6F~~ A!R - 6 I~Sn RP:DTA:EA Council Meeting: April 8, 1986 Santa Monica, California DATE: March 24, 1986 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Co-Sponsor for Summer Softball Tournaments INTRODUCTION This report recommends that Shakey's Restaurant of Santa Monica be permitted to co-sponsor two Recreation and Parks Summer Softball Tournaments. The Recreation and Parks Commission unanimously recommended the sponsorship at their meeting of March 20, 1986. BACKGROUND Throughout the year the Recreation and Parks Department conducts a series of 6 slo-pitch softball tournaments. These weekend tournaments are held for men, women and co-ed teams. The tournaments have been held on a cost covering basis. Entry fee per team for the tournaments is generally between $115 and $150, depending on the size and type of tournament. These tournaments have been successful, but expensive to the individual or team sponsor. ~~ APp ' e ~ - 1 - Staff has sought to find a solution to the problem of rising costs and has contacted several potential co-sponsors for these tournaments. Partial sponsorship of two tournaments, one men's and one co-ed, has been offered by Shakey's Restaurant of Santa Monica. In addition to the contribution of $1,500 ($750 per tournament) they would also like to contribute free pizza and soft drinks to the winning teams. They are requesting that a banner be placed at each site where the tournament is being held to advertise their restaurant during the tournament, and that they be allowed to advertise their video taping program (free to teams wishing it) during the tournaments. The Recreation and Parks Commission and City Council approved this same program in 1985 and it was very successful. By accepting the co-sponsorship by Shakey's for the two tournaments, the cost of the tournaments could be reduced and thereby attract more teams. The tournament dates are July 19-20 for the Co-Ed, and August 16-17 for the Men's C. BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT The slo-pitch softball tournaments will be covering basis with all expenses incurred to sponsor and league entry fees. League costs are in the 1986-87 Recreation and Parks budget approval of this recommendation will have no buds run on a cost be paid by the already included requests. The ~etary impact. - 2 - RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that the City Council approve the co-sponsorship and authorize the City Manager to enter into a contract with Shakey's Restaurant to sponsor two adult softball tournaments.
