SUBJECT: Request to Increase Approprlatlon Autharlty for Recelpt
af Hlstar1C Preservatlon Grant
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of thlS report lS to lnfarm the Clty Cauncll that the
State Offlce of Historlc Preservatlon has awarded a $14,000
matching grant to the Clty of Santa Monica for the contlnuatlon
of the City's HlstorlC Resources Inventory, and to request proper
appropriatlon authority to expend the grant funds.
BACKGROUND
Th1S award lS a result of the Clty'S appllcatlon and proJect
agreement for HlstorlC Preservatlon Grants-In-A1d Funds WhlCh was
submitted to the State offlce of HlstorlC Preservation ln
November; 1984.
C1ty Councll Resolut1on 6958 approv1ng the
appl1cat1on and proJect agreement 1S attached.
The fundlng appllcatlon was for $17,560 1n grant ass1stance to be
matched
by $25,059 worth of
In-kind and
other
servlces
contrlbuted by the C1ty.
Matchlng grant fundlng was sow;-ht to
complete the research and documentation of the rema1nlng 152

s~tes located ~n the 1906 annexat~on north of Montana Avenue. In
that the grant award 1S for $14, ODD, some adJustments to the
or~g~nal appl~cat~on ~n terms of the budget and number of sltes
to be documented wl11 be made.
The proJect is scheduled to be
completed w~th~n one year.
The awarded grant funds will be used to hlre a coordlnator of the
survey volunteers, and for photographic supplies.
A portlon of
the C~ty's match wl11 be to ut~llze the serv~ces of former
Plann~ng Dlrector James W. Lunsford who is already under contract
to the City, ~n part, to contr~bute h~s expert~se on Santa
Mon~ca's history.
The rema~nlng amount of the C~ty share wlll be
contrlbuted In-k~nd by volunteers dnd Clty personnel.
Members of
the Clty's Landmarks Comm~sslon will also be lnvolved.
For the
Clty, the proJect wlll be coordlnated by Asslstant Planner Karen
Rosenberg, Act~ng Secretary to the Landmarks CorrmusSlon, under
the supervls~on of Suzanne Frlck, the Actlng Plannlng and Zonlng
Dlvlsion Manager.
Ms. Rosenberg wll1 be work~ng closely with Mr.
Don Napoll of the State Offlce of Hlstor1C Preservatlon to get
the proJect underway.
The results of the survey wl11 be used in future conslderatlon of
houslng, redevelopment, general plan and zoning lssues ~n the
City.
Addltlonally,
as portlons of the Clty are surveyed,
walklng tours, drlvlng tours and a sllde show hlghllghting Santa
Monlca's hlstor~c resources will be produced.
