Introductlon
ThlS 15 an appeal from the Landmarks Co~m1ss1onls des1gnat1on
of a single-fam1ly res1dentlal structure as a Santa Monlca
Landmark.
Backgroun~
After holdlng a PubllC Hear1ng on February 17, 1981, the
Landmarks Co~m1SSlon at 1tS regular meetlng on March 17,
1981 on a vote of four to three des1gnated the resldent1a1
structure at 2424 Fourth Street a C1ty Landmark.
Th1S appl1cat1on for landMark designat10n was flIed by a
ne1ghbor1ng tenant of the property, not by the owner of the
house. The property 1S currently 1n the estate of L. McCambr1dge,
deceased, and 1S up for sale.
The structure 15 a Callforn1a bungalow style 51ngle-fa~11y home
bUllt 1n 1910. The structure Slts on a lot measur1ng 100' X 150'
and covers approx1mately one-half of the lot area.
It 15 located
10 an R-3 zone. Beslde5 the house, there 15 a small detached
bungalow-garage on the lot.
Both the house and the bungalow-garage are WOod-slded. Spec1al
features of the house 1nclude a large double-co1unned front
porch which extends to the left slde of the house, several large

glassed-ln mornlng room, and flne examples of art glass found
throughout the house.
In rnaklng ltS declslonl the Landmarks CommlSSlon made the
following flndlngs of fact and deterrnlnation regardlng the
structure:
1. It exemp11fles, symbollzes, or manifests elements
of archltectural history of the City;
2. It has aesthetlc and artlstic lnterest and value;
3. It embodles dlstlngulshlng archltectural characterlstlcs
valuable to the study of a period, style, and wethod of
constructlon; and the use of lndlgenous materlals or
craftsmanshlp make it one of the flnest survlving
examples In the City of the Callfornla bungalow style
of residence;
4. It exempllfles, symbollzes or manlfests elements of
the polltical hlstory of the Clty In that It lS
ldentlfled wlth an historlc personage ln local hlstory.
It was built for Mr. and Mrs. John w. George and
Mr. George was a member of the Clty Councl1 representlng
the 3rd ward from 1914-1916.

Alternatlves
Under the City's Landmarks Ordlnance the Clty Councll may
affirm, reverse or modify any action of the Landwarks Commlssion.
Recowmendatlon
Due to the Landmarks Comm15s1on's consldered actlon, it 15
respectfully recommended that the appeal be denied and the
determlnatlon of the COmM1SS10n be upheld.

SECTION I. The Landmarks Commlsslon of the C~ty of Santa Mon~ca
hav~ng rece~ved an application from a res~dent of the elty of
Santa Monica requesting deslgnation of the structure located at
2424 - 4th Street as a City Landmark and a Publ~c Hear~ng havlng
been held before the Landmarks Commlsslon of the Clty of Santa
Monlca on February 17, 1981, the Landmarks Commlssion hereby
makes the following Findings of Fact and Determ1nation:
1. It exempl1f1es, symbolizes, or manifests elements of
the archltectural history of the Clty;
2. It has aesthetic and artist~c interest and value:
3. It embodies d1stinguish1ng architectural characterist1cs
valuable to a study of a period, style, and method of
constructloni and the use of 1ndigenous materlals or
craftsmanship 1n that it 1S one of the finest surv1ving
examples 1n the Clty of the Californ~a bungalow style
of residence:
4. It exempllf~es, symbolizes or manifests elements of
the pollt~cal history of the City 1n that it is
identifled wlth an historic personage in local hlstory
in that lt was bu~lt for Mr. and Mrs. John W. George
and that Mr. George was a member of the C~ty Council
representlng the 3rd ward from 1914-19l6.
SECTION II. The Landmarks Commission of the City of Santa
Monica, in accordance with the provlslons of Sectlon 9612 of
Art~cle IX of the Santa Monica Mun~clpal Code, hereby determ~nes
that the structure and site at 2424 - 4th Street, is designated
as a Landmark.

SECTION III. I, Dlanne Bambrlck, Chairperson of the
Landmarks Commission of the City of Santa Monlca, hereby
certify that the above Flndings and Determlnation were
adopted on March 17, 19B1 by the Landmarks Commission
