establishment that has been an important part of Santa Monica’s history. The building was constructed in 1916 for the
First Baptist Church, later becoming the home of Iglesia Church. The sign is from the Early Motor or Post War Era.
In addition, this sign is located on a building in the Third Street Neighborhood Historic District that is eligible for the
National Register of Historic Places.
EMBASSY HOTEL 1001 03 ST The neon script lettering free-standing sign and the
supporting structure which includes the vertical steel pole,
the horizontal cross bar and the decorative metal brackets.
The lower portion shall be removed.
Findings
The sign is historically significant, in that this 1927 sign was erected or created before 1970 and the script neon
represents a significant sign-making technique of the Early Motor Era in Santa Monica.
In addition, the Meritorious Sign Review Board finds this sign to meritorious in that this sign is located on a building that
is listed in the City’s Historic Resources Inventory. The sign’s script neon remains a classic example of craftsmanship
that typifies the Early Motor Era.

cabinet sign used only to identify “live music” is representative of the sign style of the Post War Era in Santa Monica’s
history.

lettering on the yellow background directed to pedestrian scale.

of the original neon still appears to be in place.

ARTHURS LIQUOR 115 BROADWAY The projecting painted metal cabinet sign in the shape of an
arrow with the word "liquor" highlighted in neon.

the Post War Era style in Santa Monica’s history. The block type is very unique and noteworthy for the Post War Era
and complements the Moderne architecture of the building. The color scheme unifies the signs. The signs are highly

oversized cabinets. The penguin remains as the feature that harkens back to the previous coffee shop use. In addition,
the Board finds that it is architecurally integrated with the Armet-Daves designed building on-site.

"Pacific Sands Motel" in both script and block neon-lit
channel letters.
The plastic cabinet signs reading "Pacific

in a script font backlit with white halo light with modern materials such as perforated metal. The colors of the signs
