Following a public hearing held on November 14, 2000, the City Council denied
the appeal of the applicant's exclusion from the final meritorious sign Isit based
upon the following findings:
FINDINGS:
This 1944 sign (frame structure) is not historically significant in that although it
was erected or created before 1970, it is not representative of a significant sign-
making technique or style of a historic era in Santa Monica's history and does not
represent an entity or establishment that is an important part of Santa Monica's
history. The sign was refaced in 1977 when Marquis West restaurant became
the tenant. This sign is a simple cabinet sign with an acrylic face that has no
1
distinguishing features and has competing cabinets in terms of style and size. Its
placement on the building is awkward and not integrated with the architecture as
is typical of Early Motor era signs.
