SUBJECT: Safety Lighting - Beach Parking Lot 1440
Introduction
This staff report requests Councll approval of the installation of safety llghting
ln the 1440 lot. and the approprlation of $12,500 for that insta11atlon.
Background
Citizens llving 111 the vlcinlty of the lil40 beach parklng lot have petltloned (see attached
petition) the Clty to place safety lighting ln this beach parking lot because of the
hlgh lncidents of vandallsm and crime in this area. The City has, in the past. in
response to these requests lighted other beach parking lots to alleviate this problem.
The plan calls for the lnstal1ation of two lights as indicated on the attached plan.
Alternatives
1. Council may approve the attached plan for installation and authorize the approprlation
of $12,500 from the MAR Beach Fund unappropriated reserve for this and authorize the
call for blds for the instal1atlon of these llghts.
2. Councll may reJect this plan as presented and not authorlze the lnstal1ation of the
lights.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that Council authorize the installation of lights as presented. and
a 1 so authori ze the appropri atl on of 512.500 from the MAR Beach Fund unappropri ated
reserve for the lnstallation of these lights and authorize the call for bid.

Santa ~lomca Due to numerous problems in and around parking lot 1440 1,ve are
requestIng that the CIty of Santa \lomca install adequate lIghting In saId lot
\Ve have witnessed beatings and mugglngs in our commumty and strongly feel our
personal safety, gOing to and from the dimly lIt lot, is realistically threatened We also
feel eyenlng beach-goers who use the Broadway POC are equally threatened
\Ve have sustamed auto theft. auto break-ins. auto burglary, and auto vandalIsm in
parkll1g lot 1440
Consequently. due to the increases not onh- in frequency of the above mentIOned
cnmes. but also in the serIousness In nature of the crimes, we are requesting that
immedIate attention be given to the matter
