SUBJECT: Expanslon of the CiV1C Auditorium Lobby Area.
Introductlon
ThlS report presents a deslgn concept for the expansion of
the Santa Monlca C1V1C AuditorlUffi lobby area and requests
Councll approve the concept and direct Staff to proceed wlth
the proJect.
Background
In the FY 1980-81 budget council approved and approprlated
funds for the expansion of the Clvic Auditorium lobby {Page 181,
Item I}. Staff conslders thlS expanslon a necessary step In
the plan to maXlmlze the revenue potential of the CiV1C Audl-
torlum operation. The seatlng capacity of the Main Hall has
lncreased from 2,100 to 3,000 wlthout comparable expanslon of
the lobby area and facilltles. The expanslon wlll provlde
the needed space to better serve our theater/concert patron
and w11l release an area known as the East Wlng, WhlCh has
been Ilttle used, for a more positlve revenue producing use.
The East Wlng of the C1V1C AudltorlUffi has been used prlmari1y
as an exhlbit area to augment that of the Maln Hall durlng
the many exhlbit shows held at the CiV1C. This lobby expanslon
wlll replace the exh~bit space lost.

The expansion wlll utllize the canopy area at the front of
the bUllding. Staff feels it is of the utmost lmportance
that the aesthetlc appearance of the existing exterior
design be malntalned and the expanslon be accomp11shed in
a manner consistent wlth the architectural style of the
existing bUl1ding. The architectural firm of Kappe, Lotery,
Boccato, with Staff asslstance, has developed a "glass
curtain" concept WhlCh wl1l Slmply enclose the prescrlbed
area with an unbreakable transparent product known as
"Margard". This enclosure wlIl, wlthout lnterferrlng wlth
the exterior deslgn of the bUlldlng, glve the lobby an even
more open and spacious feeling. Natural ventilatlon wlll
be utlllzed in conjunction wlth the existlng air condltloningj
heating system and there wll1 be no expanslon of the existing
temperature cllrnate control system.
The expanslon will also put the buildlng in compllance wlth
current Fire Safety Code requlrements including sprlnklerlng
of the entlre bUlldlng and the relocation of the eXlstlng
snack bars WhlCh currently partlally obstruct egress from
the Maln Hall.
Recommendation
Staff recommends Council approve the deslgn concept as
presented, subJect to Archltectural Board Approval, proceed
