follOWIng item:
At the Arts Commisslon meetIng on September 9, 1985, the CIty was
requested to assist In coveiing the round-trIp cost of shIpping
the murals between Los Angeles and WashIngton, D. C. The
estimates of these costs are $1,400 for shIppIng and $800 for
cratIng.
The total cost for thIS exhibit IS about $15,000,
almost all of which IS beIng raIsed from non-Santa Monica
sources. The Arts Commission has only a total budget of $1,700
for exhl bIts. The Coroml SSlon voted to use $500 of that $1,700
for thl s exhi hI t in order to save some of the money for future
exhIbItIons, and requests that the CounCIl approprIate the
balance to ensure that the planned exhIbit In November will
actually take place.
Hence, I request that the Council approprIate the necessary
$1,700 to pay for the shIpping and cratIng costs for transportIng
the murals between Los Angeles and Washington, D. C.

INFORMATION ITEM
TO: Mayor and City Council
FROM: Arts commission
SUBJECT: Proposed Funding for the Exhibition of Panels from
Stanton Macdonald-Wright's Mural for the Santa Monica
Library
On August 27, 1985, you received an Information Item concerning
the final arrangements for the exhibition of four panels from the
Mural for the Santa Monica Library, by Stanton MacDonald-Wright.
These panels, which will be featured in a restrospective exhibi-
tion of MacDonald-Wright's artworks at the USC Atelier Gallery,
will be on loan from the Smithsonian Institution.
At its meeting last night, the Arts Commission considered the
possibility of the city's co-sponsorship of this important his-
toric exhibition. specifically, the Arts commission expressed
its interest in assisting with the costs associated with the tem-
porary loan of the mural panels from the Smithsonian. These
costs include $800 for crating and $1,400 for shipping (round-
trip, Washington, D.C. to Santa Monica) .
The Arts CO~~i5sion voted unanimously to allocate $500 of its
1985-86 Professional Services budget in partial support of these

costs. In addition to these funds, the Arts Commission recommen-
ded that City Council allocate $1,700 to defray these expenses.
Other sources of support for this exhibition will include the
California Arts Council, General Telephone, and the Smithsonian
Institution (in-kind contributions). Total costs of this exhibi-
tion are expected to total $15,256. However, the USC Atelier
Gallery is prepared to pay for these expenses if no additional
support comes from the City. The future of this exhibition will
not"be-1aopardiied if Council does not accept the recommendation
of-the-A~ts~Commission.
