SUBJECT:
FIREWORKS DISPLAY
INTRODUCTION
This report transmits the request of the Santa Monica Pier
Lessees' Association to conduct three fireworks shows on February
4, 11, and 18, 1989 at dusk. The shows would be fired from the
beach north of the Pier.
BACKGROUND
The Santa Monica Pier Lessees' Association, in an attempt to
bring people to the the Pier during the winter season, concluded
that a series of fireworks shows would be an effective manner of
attracting patrons and introducing the pier to a larger audience.
The fireworks dis~ays would start on Friday, February 4, 11, and
18 at dusk each night.
DISCUSSION
The Pier Lessees'
Association has contracted wi th Pyro
Spectacular to produce the shows. Each show would consist of

approximately 150 - 200 shells (by contrast, "Dawn's

contained I, 500 shells). The duration of each individual show
would be approximately 15 minutes.
The cost of the three shows would be:
Promotion
$ 6,000
Firewo~
TOTAL
$ 7,500
$13,500
The pier Restoration corporation fully endorses this program.
The SMPLA has budgeted for this event. As previously negotiated,
50% of the funding is provided by the City as its standard match
to the dues paid and collected.
The programs submitted by the fireworks company contain smaller
sized and fewer shells which should provide a less noisy show
than usually associated with fireworks.
A stand-by fire fighter will be on duty for all three shows. The
cost is included in the promotion costs.
RECOMMENDATIONS
staff recommends that the City Council approve the firework
display on the dates requested by the Santa Monica pier Lessees'
Association.
