SR-304-003-03 (3) . . 3t?t/- 003-03 CARS:BFM:DM City Council Meeting: June 13, 1989 Santa Monica, 6-~ JUN 1 3 19B9 California 0>- STAFF REPORT TO: Mayor and city Council FROM: city Staff SUBJECT: RECOMMENDATION TO APPROVE SANTA MONICA COLLEGE FIREWORKS DISPLAY INTRODUCTION This report recommends that the City Council approve Santa Monica College' s request for fireworks for their "Grand Summer Nights" concert program. DISCUSSION At its regularly scheduled meeting of October 11, 1983, the city Council established the policy that, aside from the Municipal sponsored Fourth of July fireworks, Council approval would be required for special fireworks events. For the past several years, Santa Monica College has conducted an evening program for the community on the day before the Fourth of July entitled, nCelebrate America". This program is held in the Santa Monica College stadium and includes a fireworks display. This year the College is expanding its summer program to include eight family oriented concerts offered free to the community. Of these, the Saturday, July 1, 1989, concert will be a salute to - 1 - 6-P JUN 1. 3 1989 . . "'. the Nation's Independence and will include a fireworks display. This concert will be held in the College stadium. In addition, the College is requesting that two smaller-scaled concerts, to be held in the College Amphitheater on saturday, July 29, and Saturday, September 9, 1989, be allowed to produce three minute fireworks display at the end of each concert. Once again, these concert programs will be free to the community. For all three concerts the fireworks displays will begin at 10:00 p.m. at the conclusion of each evening's performance. BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL IMPACT There is no budgetary/financial impact with this request. Santa Monica College pays all related inherent costs. RECOMMENDATION staff recommends that city Council approve the Santa Monica College request for fireworks for their IlGrand Summer NightsU concert series on July 1, July 29, and September 9, 1989.
