SUBJECT: Recommendation to Approve Request from Santa Monica College to Include
Fireworks in the 19th Annual "Celebrate America" Concert Program on June
30, 2001.
INTRODUCTION
This report recommends that City Council approve a fireworks display at Santa Monica
College (SMC) during the College’s "Celebrate America" concert program on Saturday,
June 30, 2001.
DISCUSSION
City Council approval is required for the use of fireworks in local events. SMC proposes to
hold the "Celebrate America" concert program on Saturday, June 30, 2001, in the College
Stadium from 5:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The celebration will end with a fireworks display
beginning at 9:00 p.m. This will be the 19th year that the event has been held at SMC.
The City has provided financial support for the celebration for the past nine years.
All state and local Fire Department ordinances for aerial display fireworks will apply to this
event. Site plan approval will be required from the Fire Department, including review of
the spectator area, display area, and firework debris fall out area. As in the past, a Santa
Monica Fire Safety Officer will be on site for the duration of the fireworks display. Campus

Police will handle parking and traffic control and will direct traffic to exit on Pico Boulevard
rather than on residential streets. Campus Police will also monitor the gates to ensure that
no alcohol or fireworks are brought into the stadium.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Citys Cultural Affairs Division has budgeted $10,000 in account 01560.566550 to

support the event. Santa Monica College will bear all other event costs and Campus
Police will provide all security and traffic control.

Staff recommends that City Council approve Santa Monica Colleges request to include
