SUBJECT: Recommendation to approve Al ternate Parade Route for
Third Street Promenade September 16, 1989 Grand opening
INTRODUCTION
The city's Event Management Team has received a request from the
Bayside District Corporation (BDC) to conduct a parade on a route
other than the City's authorized parade route (SMMC section
4241) .
The following report outlines this event request with
requirements as established by the City's Event Management Team,
and recommends Ci ty council approval of the alternate parade
route as requested.
BACKGROUND
At its meeting of August 2, 1989, the City's Event Management
Team reviewed a request by BDC to conduct a parade in conjunction
saturday, September 16, 1989, at 12:00 p.m.
The parade would

with their Grand Opening of the Third street Promenade on
proceed south down the Third Street Promenade from the Wilshire
end to the Broadway end. The parade would turn west on Broadway
and disperse immediately in the first block going west. The
staging area would be along the south side of Wilshire from the
Third street Promenade, going west to Second street, and
continuing south on the east side of Second street as far as the

entrance to Parking structure #2. The area occupied would be the
metered parking lane and first traffic lane out from the
sidewalk.
BUDGET/FINANCIAL IMPACT
The Bayside District Corporation will pay all costs associated
with this event, except for certain inter-departmental services
provided by the Police Department, General Services, and Cultural
and Recreation Services.
RECOMMENDATION
staff recommends that the City Council approve the following:
1. The parade date of saturday, September 16, 1989;
2. The parade route beginning at Wilshire Boulevard,
proceeding south on the Third street Promenade to
Broadway.

OF THE CITY OF SANTA KONICA AUTHORIZING
THE HOLDING OF A PARADE ON SEPTEMBER 16, ~989,
ON A ROUTE OTHER THAN THE OFFICIAL CITY PARADE ROUTE
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 4241 of the Santa Monica
Municipal Code, the City Council may by Resolution authorize a
parade route other than the City's official parade route,
NOW THEREFORE, THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA
MONICA DOES RESOLVE AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. That on september 16, 1989, between the hours
of 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m., participants in the Bayside Oistrict
Corporation Grand Opening parade are authorized to conduct a
parade alonq a route other than the City's official parade route
as follows:
The parade will start in Santa Monica at the
Third street Promenade, and wilshire Boulevard,
proceed south along the Promenade to Broadway,
turn west onto Broadway and disperse between the
Third Street Promenade and Second street. The
staginq area for the parade will be along the
south side of Wilshire Boulevard between the
Third street Promenade and Second Street and
along the East side of Second STreet between
Wilshire Boulevard and Parkinq structure NlllrlI,er

SECTION 2. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption
of this Resolution, and thenceforth and thereafter the same shall
be in full force and effect.
