At thlS meetlng Paul Clark, Jl~ Buckman and LaVerne qoss spoke on the deslre of the communlty to have the new Vlrglnla Avenue Park Center named the Thelma Terry Center due to her devotlon and lnfluence wlth the youth of the area. Mrs. Llbuser moved to recommend to the Clty Councll that the new Communlty Center at Vlrglnla Avenue Park be named the Thelma Terry Center. Thelma Terry was a local resldent who devoted her 11fe to serv1ng the young and old 1n the commun1ty. Mrs. Terry was educated 1n the C1ty of Santa Monlca. Her family moved to Santa Hon1ca before the turn of the century, mak1ng them p10neers of the area. She attended Howard Cn1vers1ty 1n Washlngton D.C., maJor1ng 1D Ch1ld Development. It was through the governmental program in the 1930's, under the WPA Arts Program, that she ga1ned the exper1ence Wh1Ch led to her Job with the Santa Mon1ca Recreation and Parks Department. rirs. Terry was hlred as an ass1stant ln 1948, and 1n 1950, under Director Leonard Br1ght, was h1red as a full t1me employee. She was 1nstrumental 1n develop1ng programs for lnterraC1al ch1ldren, teenagers and young adults, Monday through Fr1day's at Memor1al Park, named by her young peers Mrs. Terry's Park. Among some of the many Sk1lls ~trs. Terry helped to teach the ch1ldren were crocheting, tap danc1ng and kn1tt1ng. She developed a speclal young adult club WhlCh was especlally 1mportant to the commun1ty. ~1rs. Terry was presented a Certlf1cate of Appreciation and a Placque of Recogn1t1on by the C1ty of Santa Mon1ca. BORN IN SANTA MONICA ON SEPTEMBER 21,1901, SHE WAS EJUCATED THROUGH THE SANTA MONICA UNIFIED SCHOOL SYSTEM DURI~G THE 1920's and 1930's. (A GRADUATE OF SM10HI) SHE ATTEr;O:CD HOHARD UNIVERSITY, WASHINGTON D.C. AND NAJORED IN CHILD DEVELOPMENT. IT WAS THROUGH THE GOVERNMENTAL 1930 W.P.A ARTS PROGR~~ THAT SHE GAINED HER EXPERIENCE, ALONG WITH HER PERSONAL QUALITIES THAT QUALIFIED HER FOR HER JOB WITH THE SANTA MONICA RECREATION SYSTEM. SHE WAS FIRST HIRED AS fu~ ASSISTANT TO NOW DR. AL QUINN AT MEMORIAL PARK in 1948 AND LATER HIRED AS A FULL TIME EMPLOYEE IN 1950 UNDER THE DIRECTION OF LENARD BRIGHT. SHE WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN DEVELOPING PROGR&~S FOR I~TER-RACIAL CHILDREN, TEENAGERS AND ADULTS AT THE PRESENTLY NAMED l<1ENORIAL PARK. (FORNALLY NANED BY HER YOUNG PEERS "NRS. TERRY'S PARK,> N10NG SOME OF THE MANY SKILLS MRS. TERRY TAUGHT WERE TAP D~~CING, SQUARE DANCING, CROCHETING, KNITTING AND MANY OTHERS. SHE DEVELOPED r SPECIAL YOUNG ADULT CLUB FOR YOUTH 17-22 IN AGE, WHICH WAS ESPE~ iliLY IMPORTANT TO THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE CON':>1U~n TY . THELMA TERRY PASSED AWAY APRIL 22nd 1979. SHE IS SURVIVED BY HER HUSBAND, THO~~S TERRY, THOMAS TERRY JR. AND A DAUGHTER SHEILA. WHEN NRS:- TERRY RETIRED SHE ~lAS PRESENTED \HTH A CERTIFICATE OF - APPRECIATION. WE FEEL THAT IT WOULD BE AN HONOR TO HAVE THE THE CO!~~UNITY CENTER AT VIRGINIA PARK NAMED AFTER MRS.
