Donation of Quilt Made by Children in
Recreation and Parks Playground Program to the city
council and Proclamation of July as Recreation and
Parks Month
INTRODUCTION
This report requests that on the behalf of the City the City
Council officially receive a handmade quilt made by children of
Santa Monica who participate in the Recreation and Parks
playground program. The quilt was prepared in commemoration of
the month of July which the National Recreation and Parks
Association has deemed as National Recreation and Parks Month.
BACKGROUND
The City of Santa Monica has many fine recreational facilities
and offers many different recreation programs to the residents of
the community. One of these programs is the free arts and crafts
program which is conducted after school at 7 elementary schools
and 5 park sites. Over 300 children participate in the program
weekly at the various sites.
During the past 5 months, several of these children (see attached
list) under the guidance of Marian Berke, Arts and Crafts
Specialist, have prepared a handmade quilt in recognition of
Parks and Recreation Month. The quilt depicts the many

recreation activities including sports, music, drama and arts in
which the children participate during the year.
BUDGETARY/FINANCIAL IMPACT
None.
RECOMMENDATION
staff recommends that on behalf of the city the City council
officially accept the commemorative quilt prepared by the
children of the Santa Monica Youth Afterschool Recreation Program
and officially proclaim the month of July as Recreation and
Parks Month.
