Ordinance Amending Santa Monica Municipal Code
Section 660lA to Increase the Transient
Occupancy Tax Rate
In connection with the adoption of the 1987-88 Budget, the
City Manager has requested that the city Attorney prepare an
ordinance amending Santa Monica Municipal Code Section 6601A to
increase the transient occupancy tax rate from its current rate
of 2% of the total amount paid for room rental to 4% of the total
amount paid for room rental.
Municipal Code Section 6601 provides for a 6% transient
occupancy tax. Municipal Code section 6601A, adopted on october
26, 1982, provides for an additional transient occupancy tax of
2%. The accompanying ordinance amends Municipal Code section
6601A to increase the additional transient occupancy tax from 2%
to 4%. with this amendment, which will become effective October
1, 1987, the city's transient occupancy tax will be increased
from 8% to 10%.

AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF SANTA MONICA AMENDING SANTA MONICA MUNICIPAL
CODE SECTION 6601A TO INCREASE THE TRANSIENT
OCCUPANCY TAX RATE
THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SANTA MONICA DOES ORDAIN AS
FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1.
Effective October 1, 1987, Santa Monica
Municipal Code section 6601A is amended to read as follows:
SECTION 6601A. Additional Tax. In
addition to the tax imposed and levied by
Section 6601, there is hereby imposed and
levied on each and every transient a tax
for general revenue purposes equivalent to
four percent (4%) of the total amount paid
for room rental by or for any such
transient to any hotel, which tax shall be
imposed and levied in the same manner as
the tax imposed and levied by section
6601.
SECTION 2.
Any provision of the Santa Monica Municipal
Code or appendices thereto inconsistent with the provisions of
this Ordinance, to the extent of such inconsistencies and no

further, are hereby repealed or modified to that extent necessary
to affect the provisions of this Ordinance.
SECTION 3. If any section, subsection, sentence, clause,
or phrase of this Ordinance is for any reason held to be invalid
or unconstitutional by a decision of any court of any competent
jurisdiction, such decision shall not affect the validity of the
remaining portions of this Ordinance. The City Council hereby
declares that it would have passed this Ordinance, and each and
every section, subsection, sentence, clause, or phrase not
declared inval id or unconstitutional without regard to whether
any portion of the Ordinance would be subsequently declared
invalid or unconstitutional.
SECTION 4. The Mayor shall sign and the City Clerk shall
attest to the passage of this Ordinance. The city Clerk shall
cause the same to be published once in the official newspaper
within 15 days after its adoption. This Ordinance shall become
effective after 30 days from its adoption.
