SR-205-007 (9) PD:JTB:FF:f:\police\share\staffrpt\swsale Santa Monica, California City Council Meeting: September 10, 2002 TO: Mayor and City Council FROM: City Staff SUBJECT: Recommendation to Sell a Smith & Wesson Revolver to a Retired Police Officer Introduction This report requests that the City Council authorize the sale of a Smith & Wesson revolver to Retired Police Officer David Henderson. Mr. Henderson retired from the Santa Monica Police Department on June 1, 2002 after 34 years of honorable service. The revolver was issued to Retired Police Officer David Henderson on April 1, 1968. Background The Smith & Wesson revolvers are no longer being used by the Santa Monica Police Department. The weapon is obsolete and cannot be reissued to another police officer. Most law enforcement agencies in Los Angeles County do not issue this type of weapon to newly hired police officers. Budget/Financial Impact Rangemaster Jason Mann estimates that the Smith & Wesson revolver is valued at $50.00. Recommendation Staff recommends that the City Council authorize the sale of the Smith & Wesson revolver to Retired Police Officer David Henderson. All State and Federal required documentation would be completed prior to the sale of the revolver. Prepared by: James T. Butts, Jr., Chief of Police 2
